Location of Westree in Ontario

Westree is an unincorporated community in the Unorganized, North Part of Sudbury District in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located at the end of the spur Ontario Highway 560A and lies on the north shore of Duchabani Lake about 110 kilometres (68 mi) northwest of the centre of Sudbury. The community is on the Canadian National Railway mainline, and is the location of Westree railway station served by Via Rail.

Westree was named by the Canadian Northern Railway,(1899-1923)as it made its way to Port Arthur, Ontario.

Nation Wide Expantion.By 1908 the Railway had made it way to Capreol Ontario. In 1911 federal funding was made available for contruction of the railway line from Capreol to Port Arthur, completed in 1924. The eastern section between Toronto and Ruel was completed in 1912, reached Gogama in 1914. As the railroad is advancing to the west, ties are needed to lay the rail down. To the south of Westree, lumbering operation began in Sellwood, now " Milnet" in 1917 by the Marshay lumber Company, they built a mill that operated for 22 years, suppliying ties to the railroad and later to the minning companies.Main area of lumber operation was north on the Vermillion River.

Here in Westree the first entrepreneur to start lumber operation was J D Campbell, he operated a mill at the south end of Lake Opikinimika and the north end of Lake Deschenes to this day you still can see remains of the mills.

To the west of Westree, in Gogama W.H. Poupore setup lumber operation 1919,main operation to supply ties for the railroad.
